You Don't Have to Start in Med-Surg as a new Grad nurse

In reflecting on my career, I'm reminded of something I heard a lot of as a student: start in Med-Surg. I got lots of reasons. In hindsight, It would've been better to do the thinking myself regarding what I wanted instead of listening to those telling me how it is supposed to go.  Do You Have to start in Med-Surg as a new graduate nurse? No. That is my opinion after working in different specialties of nursing. It is not a bad idea to start in medical-surgical nursing but it is not a requirement or an absolute necessity. If you get the opportunity to work in a specialty you would like to end up in, please go ahead and take that opportunity. Your body will thank you later.  When I was graduating from college, a professor I admired told me to start in med-surg. And back then, it wasn't uncommon to here people say "start in med/surg". One of the reasons I sort of recall was so you can learn the basics of nursing and what not. Another rationale was that because you ar...

You Can Now Buy Kindle Books on Android app (November 2024)

Yay! This is so exciting. One of the ways I spend my time is reading. Although I haven't done much of it this year and think I did more of it when I worked. Then again, I've had other things to this year so there's that. But a benefit of Retiring Early or getting FIRE'd is having some time for reading and I enjoy  both physical books and Kindle books.

I use the Amazon kindle app on my phone to read a lot and this morning, I saw the notification saying: You can now buy Kindle books from the android app. Find your next read.

I checked it out and behold, you can. This feature had been disabled from some time. I wasn't aware of fit initially because I downloaded an old version of Kindle on my phone since I preferred that and didn't update. So even now, I can use that old phone to buy directly. However, I cannot use the app on my new phone which I've had for sometime.

I first found out a few years ago when I recommended a Kindle book to a co-worker who informed me that she couldn't purchase it on the app. I later discovered that there was an issue with google billing and Amazon had disabled in-app purchases as a result. The workaround was to build a reading list and buy it on the website. I didn't build a list but the books I would look at would show up in  my browsing history and so I would simply click on it then and buy. Still, it was a bit of a hassle because amazon has kindle deals and sales where you can buy books for $1.99 or $2.99 at times and if I'm not able to get to a computer sometime, the book is back to regular price. Yes, most of my kindles books were bought at prices cheaper than buying used books. And the best part is that I don't have to have a hoard of physical books (which I have a lot of) because it's stored in my Kindle. Used books cost abut $5 lately and so being able to buy Kindle books for less has been nice.

I'm not sure what happened or what changed between Google and Amazon but a search this  morning still yielded the old results so in case anyone is curious: Yes, you can now buy Kindle books from your Android app. This means that you can pay with your amazon payment methods including points card, gift cards or Kindle Rewards.

I decided to check it out by clicking on a book and it gave the option to buy so we really can buy Kindle books on the Kindle app starting this month, November 2024. Or should I say, starting today, November 21, 2024 you can buy Kindle books via the Android app. This is really exciting news to take advantage of deals around Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

I tested it out and here's a screenshot.

Screen shot showing you can by kindle books via Android app.

So there you have it. If you couldn't buy kindle books earlier on the Android app, now you can. Go on and enjoy.
