You Don't Have to Start in Med-Surg as a new Grad nurse

In reflecting on my career, I'm reminded of something I heard a lot of as a student: start in Med-Surg. I got lots of reasons. In hindsight, It would've been better to do the thinking myself regarding what I wanted instead of listening to those telling me how it is supposed to go.  Do You Have to start in Med-Surg as a new graduate nurse? No. That is my opinion after working in different specialties of nursing. It is not a bad idea to start in medical-surgical nursing but it is not a requirement or an absolute necessity. If you get the opportunity to work in a specialty you would like to end up in, please go ahead and take that opportunity. Your body will thank you later.  When I was graduating from college, a professor I admired told me to start in med-surg. And back then, it wasn't uncommon to here people say "start in med/surg". One of the reasons I sort of recall was so you can learn the basics of nursing and what not. Another rationale was that because you ar...

One of the benefits of being FI/RE'd is

not having to wake up to an alarm clock.

Although it's got it's downsides. For example, a friend's text woke me up this morning. Although I would've preferred to be up earlier than I did. I was up late. As for the text, it came after 10 a.m. I have my Do Not Disturb set to automatically come on at 10  p.m and go off at 9 a.m. It used to be 9:30 but I changed it recently. And my current phone is so good about it that I don't get any kind of notification. The downside to that is that if anyone calls me before the time, it doesn't ring. It's been helpful in terms of those who've tried calling me at 7 a.m. That early? Why?

I had been wanting to wake up early and had gotten better at getting up at 7:30. A couple weeks ago, I got up late during the week and I was back to doing good this week except for today. Another downside is that I'm trying to exercise and eat breakfast early and so I didn't exercise today since I was up later than usual. I'm usually eating around 9:30 and I'm hoping to move it up. Being able to freely exercise has been a nice thing to do. It wasn't something I had time for back when I worked.

The reason why I aim to get up early is the Market. Sometimes, it helps to be there at open if I want to do a certain activity. A lot of times, I set alerts. But it doesn't help if I'm sleeping when the alert comes on. Overall, it's been a good time to set a rhythm and get a routine of sorts. I've done much better and I'm doing better so that's good.

Overall, it's been so nice not having to worry about being up by a certain time, what kind of patient I'm going to have, how the shift is going to go and whatever I used to think or worry about. And if I happen to wake up at some point and go back to bed later, there's no need to stress about being up at a certain time. It's been really nice not having an alarm coming on in the morning.

So if you want to give yourself a reason to get Financially Independent and Retire Early, maybe one thing you can look forward to is not having to wake up to an alarm clock...unless you choose to.

If you're looking to fire yourself, what is something you're looking forward to doing?
